Pros: Windows 7 and has disk for windows 8 if you want to install it. Has a nice i5 processor in it. Seemed fast and responsive.
Nice sturdy case, not plastic. Touch pad can be turned off by a double tap and has two physical buttons. Seemed like a nice laptop until the errors started. Cons: First, is this a typical HP thing or what! I got this and did the updates to get it all up to date. Rebooted and got this error.System Fan (90B). 'Continued operation is not recommended.the system will shut down in 15 seconds.'
I now am trying to get a hold on Newegg so I can RMA this thing, already, after one day of use. Well, setup anyway. Now everytime it boots it has the System Fan (90B) error and then shuts down. The forums say the fan might have died and A LOT of people are having the same problems. After one day.wow!
Stay away from the Probook 4540s. Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed in how quick I had problems with this HP laptop. I still think I hear the fan running so maybe it's just getting ready to die. After one day.wow! Stay away from the Probook 4540s.
Pros: - Comes with Windows 7 installed with the option to upgrade to Windows 8 if you want. Great for basic functions (net browsing, word processing, etc.) - Good looking display considering the lower resolution (1366 x 768) - Upgradable Memory - 4 USB ports (two of them are USB 3.0) - HDMI out works very well Cons: - The track pad isn't the best. It only works about 60% of the time for me. According to other reviews I've seen, the track pad seems to widespread issue. I use a wireless USB mouse, so this wasn't a major probelm for me, but it is a negative - The battery life, while not terrible, isn't going to impress anyone - I wish the speakers were just a bit louder - Not a good choice for gaming. I have a gaming desktop, so I've never felt the need to test this laptop's gaming chops - I would have liked designated volume buttons, but that's more of a personal preference though Other Thoughts: I added an extra 4GB of memory for fairly cheap, and it made quite a difference.
My boot-up takes about 30 seconds. I still get a lot of email questions about this, so I'll make sure to emphasize on this: My machine came with Windows 7 installed. It also came with a disc that allows you to upgrade to Windows 8 only if you choose to (for some reason.) I still run Windows 7 out of preference. Pros: One of the first things I noticed was that this machine came with recovery media for Windows 7 and 8 already in the box which was a pleasant and welcome surprise. The machine is well built, aesthetically pleasing, not too heavy for my lap, and works as expected with very good performance. One of my favorite parts is the main access cover on the bottom that is released by the battery clips and provides access to pretty much all of the internals which will make upgrades and potential repairs so much easier and less time consuming. It's solid, plenty fast, and well designed for ease of use and upgrade.
There wasn't even that much bloatware to remove which was also a plus. The machine arrived promptly and undamaged as well. Cons: There is only one con and that is the trackpad. The trackpad becomes barely responsive at best when the machine is under heavy load in some tasks, especially during startup. This is probably more related to hard drive speed and not Newegg's fault.
Just something I noticed. It's slightly annoying, but not a dealbreaker.
Other Thoughts: This is a very good example of a decent HP laptop in comparison with previous generations and models I have worked with that just were not as well designed. So far I like it! Pros: Nice-looking business class laptop, especially when on sale. Working well with OSX86. Cheap memory upgrades and wifi-cards on auction sites Easy to upgrade Fairly complete features Comes with Windows install media Cons: So-so screen quality HDMI instead of display-port Battery life so-so My laptop looked re-boxed. And had some blemishes, but was not sold as a refurb Other Thoughts: Mine had a dent on the mesh panel (where a speaker is), which I did not realize at first, as well as some sticker gunk near the track pad. I really needed to get this working for my needs, so I did not opt to return it, despite looking like a refurb.
